What on earth is an essay?!

An essay is a piece of writing that has 5 paragraphs. In this piece of writing (usually around a page) you have an opinion about something and you try to prove your point by coming up with evidence and examples. I am going to teach you the basic essay structure. We are also going to focus on grammar, word choice ,spelling and punctuation.

Why write an essay at all?

- It expresses how well you understand the material/topic

- To improve your vocab. and writing/communication skills. You will need these skills at the HBO

- It is an academic skill, something you will need to use after you leave HLW. 

-  It improves critical thinking and trains you how to make a point. It also helps youto convince someone of your views on a topic.
