Can you spell & name all 13 objects?

Slide 29 - Open vraag

Gross & Fine motor skills
Control over our large muscle groups for movements that require strength & speed.
Control over our smaller muscle groups for movements that require dexterity* and precision.

*dexterity = skill with hands
I admire her dexterity with chopsticks

In short: gross motor skills are using the large muscles in the body.

In short: fine motor skills are using the small muscles in the body.
These develop BEFORE fine motor skills
These develop AFTER gross motor skills

Slide 30 - Tekstslide

Can you think of 4 examples of fine AND gross motor skills?

Let's do an activity (hand out)

  • we play the game with two teams
  • focus on playground equipment vocabulary
  • one member of the team sits in front of the classroom (on the HOT SEAT, back facing the whiteboard)
  • the other team members describe the word to their classmate who tries to guess what it is.
  • the team that guesses the word first receives a point
  • the hot seat students change after every new word

Role and Benefits of Sensory Play
  • Builds connections that guide brain development.
  • Helps a child's brain be stimulated by sending signals to help strengthen their brains neural pathways.
  • Helps develop and enhance a child's cognitive, social and emotional, physical and language development.

Slide 36 - Tekstslide

Can you name and explain them?

Slide 40 - Tekstslide

Q1: Why is it important to include sensory experiences in a child’s life?
  • Helps refine their sensory networks within their brain.

  • It helps them tune into what’s important information coming from the environment and tune out things that aren’t important to do a certain task.

  • It helps develop language, play, socialisation and problem solving skills.

Slide 41 - Tekstslide

Q2&3: Can you name the 3 hidden senses and explain them?
Five "obvious" senses: sight, smell, hearing, taste and touch.

The three hidden senses:
  1. Vestibular: the sense of balance & feeling grounded in whatever we do.
  2. Proproception: the sense of effort and movement & gravity that tells us what our body is doing and where it is in space.
  3. Interreception: the sense or rather messages from our internal organs which tell us when we feel hungry, nervous or need go to the bathroom.

Slide 42 - Tekstslide

Team Task
I am curious about your internship and what is done to stimulate the development of children's Gross & Fine motor skills and Sensory skills.
  • Write me an email (but stay polite and write to Ms Molenaar)
  • Write about how your school/daycare stimulates these skills. (you can write about the playground, (PE) lessons, specific activities etc.)
  • Are there things that you feel could be done better? (E.g. boring playground, not enough colouring pencils etc.)
  • Do a websearch and find a fun activity (for each skill) that you would like to use with your target group.
  • Begin & close your email appropriately.
