Modals?

Modals part 2. 

Must, have (got) to, should. 

Je gebruikt: should (not) + hele werkwoord als je vindt dat iets (niet) zou moeten. Je wilt bijvoorbeeld advies geven of iets afraden. 

You shouldn't jump from a cliff that high. 

Modals part 2. 

Je gebruikt must (not) + hele werkwoord als je vindt dat iets (niet) moet. Must is krachtiger dan should. 

They must wear a suit to the interview. 

You mustn't talk during a funeral. 

Je zou niet zo dicht bij de rand moeten gaan staan. Wordt:

1. You shouldn't stand so close to the edge of the cliff.
2. You mustn't stand so close to the edge of the cliff.

Modals part 2. 

Je gebruikt has to/ have to + hele werkwoord om zekerheid, noodzaak of verplichting uit te drukken. Je gebruikt has/have to + hele werkwoord ook om te zeggen dat iets moet van iemand anders. 

This answer has to be correct.  (zekerheid)

They have to get up early. (verplichting) 

The window has to be closed when it's cold. (noodzaak)

Let op!

Als je have to in ontkennende zin gebruikt, dan veranderd de betekenis van 'moeten' in 'niet hoeven'. 

Met don't have/ doesn't has to + hele werkwoord geef je aan dat er geen verplichtig in. 

You don't have to do that if you don't want to. 

The school has to close to fire practices every year. Has to staat in deze zin voor:

1. Verplichting
2. Zekerheid
3. Noodzaak
