  • Stadtholder, Maurice of Orange.

Grand Pensionary: 
The political advisor of the States General. Always a regent from Holland. He had the power to decide policies about taxes, foreign affairs and law.
Stadtholder:
Captain General of the army. They are all descendants of Willem of Orange.

The Twelve Years'Truce
When the Republic and Spain agreed to stop fighting for 12 years.
  • Lets make peace, the war is too expensive
  • Lets keep on fighting, they're almost defeated

Maurice convinced the States General to arrest Johan. Civil War was evaded, strict Calvinism became the official religion. But Johan lost his head.

Did the republic crush Spain after the Twelve Years' Truce?
  • No, they did not. In 1621 the war continued. But Maurice died in 1625. His brother became stadtholder. He conquered some important cities.
  • Spain tried to restrict trade to the Republic (embargo), but the Republic just plundered Spanish ships in revenge.
  • In 1648 the Peace of Münster was signed. The Republic had peace, but also recieved the Spanish Netherlands.

In 1585 the Spanish conquered Antwerp. 
Antwerp was one of the most important trade cities. After the Spanish came, most of the wealthy merchants left for Amsterdam.
The waterway were blocked and trade moved to Amsterdam.
