At the end of the lesson you will be able to simplify fractions by finding the greatest common factor.
What do you already know about fractions and how we can simplify them?
What is a Fraction?
Fractions represent a part of a whole. They have a numerator (top number) and a denominator (bottom number).
Simplifying Fractions
To simplify a fraction, divide the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor (GCF).
Finding the GCF
List the factors of each number. The largest factor they share is the GCF.
Example 1
Simplify 8/12. Factors of 8: 1, 2, 4, 8. Factors of 12: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12. GCF is 4. So, 8/12 = 2/3.
Example 2
Simplify 15/25. Factors of 15: 1, 3, 5, 15. Factors of 25: 1, 5, 25. GCF is 5. So, 15/25 = 3/5.
Practice Exercise
Simplify the following: 6/9, 10/20, and 14/28.
