Frankenstein is a Gothic novel. 

  1. Unrealistic (isolated) settings: ship to the North Pole; laboratory; graveyard; Orkney Islands.
  2. Unexplainable scary events: the monster is created from body parts of the dead; many people die mysteriously. 
  3. Improbable sentational plot: Victor Frankenstein creates a monster and abandones it, after which the monster tries to kill his maker.

  • As a reaction, authors in the 19th century went back to the supernatural, the unexplained.
