- als het plan ontstaat tijdens het gesprek (Shall we go to the cinema?)
- Bij een voorspelling gebaseerd op een mening, onzekerheid over de toekomst. Vaak in combinatie met I think, probably of possibly. I think that we will have flying cars in 30 years.
- Bij een spontaan aanbod. (Je ziet iemand onderuit gaan op het ijs. I will help you.)
- Bij feiten, of dingen die zo vaak gebeuren dat je ze verwacht. When the weather gets bad, parents will bring their children to school.

- Bij een voorspelling gebaseerd op een aanwijzing. Look at those clouds! It is going to rain.

- Bij dingen die gepland zijn en vrijwel zeker gaan gebeuren. Je hebt al dingen geregeld. (persoonlijke plannen) I'm going to the cinema tonight.
- Vaak kun je als je de Present continuous kan gebruiken ook de to be going to tijd gebruiken.
