POPULATION & SETTLEMENT

Slide 1 - Tekstslide

What is POPULATION?

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

POPULATION
Population is the total number of people, animals or things found in an area.
Three key concepts related to population are:
 GROWTH, DISTRIBUTION and DENSITY

SETTLEMENT is an important concept in Population study.

The area or place where people live, work and/or carry out activities is called a SETTLEMENT

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

POPULATION DISTRIBUTION
This is the pattern created over the landscape by the way people settle.

Population may be Evenly or Unevenly distriputed.
POPULATION DENSITY
This is the total number of persons living in an area per square mile/km.

Population Density may be:
High, Moderate or Low.

An even population is one that is uniformly spread out over an area. These are usually planned settlements.
An uneven population is one that is randomly spread out over an area. These are usually unplanned, haphazard settlement
High population density means that there is a large number of people  in a given area. These settlements are described as NUCLEATED.

Moderate population density means that there is an average or mediun number of people in a given area. Population that is neither too large or too small is ideal.

Low population densityL means that there is a small number of people in a given area.  These settlements are described as DISPERSED.

POPULATION SIZE
This is the total number of individuals in a population.
Key concepts:
Carrying Capacity
Over Population
Optimum Population
Under Population
POPULATION GROWTH
This is the increase in the total population of an area.
Key consepts :
Natural Increase
Birth Rate
Death Rate
Infant Mortality Rate
Fertility Rate
Life Expectancy

Slide 5 - Tekstslide

What is the difference between population Density and Distribution
A
number of individuals vs. use of space
B
total space vs. total individuals
C
total individual per space vs. use of space
D
increase per space vs. use of space
