Breathing

Uvula is open, air can enter pharynx from nasal cavity

Epiglottis is open, air can enter windpipe from pharynx

Epiglottis is closed, preventing food from entering windpipe but into the oesophagus

Choking

Uvula or epiglottis opens by accident during swallowing. Food enters nasal cavity or windpipe.

Windpipe (trachea)

• Rings of cartilage keep it open at all times
• Inside is filled with mucus and cilia (like nasal cavity)
• cilia bring mucus towards the oesophagus to be swallowed
• Bronchi become smaller and smaller inside the lungs
