A gerund is an –ing
form of a verb (ww) that is used as a noun (znw) rather than as a verb, without
a form of to be.

• Na werkwoorden waarmee je aangeeft wat je wel of niet leuk vindt 
(like, dislike, love, hate, fancy, envy)

• Na zintuigelijke werkwoorden 
(see, watch, hear, smell, feel)

• Na de specifieke werkwoorden 
avoid, consider, give up, go on, keep, manage, mind, prefer, recommend, start, stop en suggest

  • Na uitdrukkingen en voorzetsels

Wanneer je gebruik je to+ het hele werkwoord?
• Na werkwoorden die een wens uitdrukken (wish, hope, want, dream, desire)

• Na werkwoorden die een bevel uitdrukken (demand, forbid, prohibit, allow, restrict)

• Na de specifieke werkwoorden 
decide, expect, choose, hesitate, learn, refuse, manage

We use the infinitive without to after modal verbs can, could, may, might, will, shall, would, should, must:



She can sleep in the guest room tonight.

We might buy a new sofa.

Not: We might to buy a new sofa.

We also use the infinitive without to after let, make and (optionally) help:

He lets us use some of his land to grow vegetables.

You can’t make a cat do anything it doesn’t want to do.
