Past simple

Past Simple

You use the past simple when something happened in the past and is finished.

The past simple is what in Dutch is called the verleden tijd.

 Regular Verbs

After a regular verb you put -ed'

I walk -> I walked

He walks -> He walked

They walk -> They walked

Past Simple - Irregular verbs

Some verbs in English are irregular, this means that in the past tense they don't get '-ed' at the end, but have their own form:

To write -> wrote; I wrote her a letter last week

to go -> went; He went to Italy last year

to make -> made: They made a very nice meal two days ago

Past Simple - Irregular verbs

There are no rules for the irregular verbs, you just have to learn them by heart

Past Simple - Signal word

In Dutch signal words are called 'signaal woorden'  

These word help you to see if something happened in the past

• yesterday
• last week
• ten minutes ago
• in 2007

Grammar 11: Past simple

- Als je over iets wilt praten dat in het verleden is gebeurd en ook is afgelopen.

- Tijdsaanduiding:

 - yesterday                     - a week ago                                               ! LET OP !

- last year                        - in 1995                                     I bought a bike last week.

                                                                                     NL: Ik heb vorige week een fiets gekocht.

He visited Morocco last summer.                                                             

They went to Scotland a week ago.

I climbed Mount Everest in the summer of 1995. 

We ate a delicious meal last night. 

 Present perfect

- In het verleden begonnen en nu nog steeds aan de gang. 

- Als het niet belangrijk is wanneer iets gebeurd is, resultaten zijn zichtbaar. 

- Tijdsaanduiding:

-  for                         

 - since

It has rained since last Friday. (het is in het verleden begonnen, nog steeds aan de gang)

He has known her since last summer. (vrienden sinds het verleden, nu nog steeds)

Past simple vs present perfect

     I knew Julie for 10 years.                                           I have known Julie for 10 years.

      I lost my keys yesterday.                                                      I have lost my keys!
