Classroom expectations

  • No entering the classroom without a tutor

  • Arrive in correct uniform and dress code

  • No food or drink in the classroom - Only water in a clear bottle.

  • Set up your work area, taking out your kit.

  • Ensure you have your logbook and learner review booklet out - with a pen and any note books.

  • Fully participate in your session

  • NO use of mobile phones - unless instructed by your tutor.

  • Be respectful to others and the working environment

  • Ask questions if you are unsure.

Aftercare advice

  • How your client will maintain the look you will give them. Your client must understand the potential cos, time and effort that may be required for maintenance.


  • Time intervals between services - Your client should know how often to return to the salon and how costly the services will be to maintain their look.


  • Present and future products and services. Advise your client on additional products they may need for home maintenance and any future services they require.

  • The positive outcome or value that a feature provides to the customer.

  • Focusing on what the product will actually do to your clients hair and why this will help them achieve their desired look.

Brick wind set

  1. Complete full consultation with client.

  2. Identify correct products to be used.

  3. Shampoo and condition clients hair.

  4. Apply products and brush hair to prepare for the set.

  5. Begin winding the set using on base method.

  6. Once all hair is secured, place a hair net around the clients hair and place under a hood dryer.

  7. Ensure you check client comfort throughout.

On base vs Off base

On base - Sits directly on the section taken. Used to add curl and volume.


Off base - Sits away from the section. Used to create curl with no volume.

Key term - Hygroscopic

Meaning - The hairs ability to absorb moisture from the air.

Key term - Hydrogen bonds

Meaning - The temporary bonds found within the hair. These are broken down with water and heat.

Key term - Alpha Keratin, Beta Keratin

Meaning - Alpha Keratin - Hair in its natural state, before being washed or blowdried.

Beta Keratin - Hair after it has been blow-dried or styled using heat.

Setting and dressing

  • Complete a consultation on a peer for a brick set.

  • Choose suitable styling and finishing products for a shampoo and set.

  • Complete a brick set on a training head.

  • Once complete put a hair net over the head and place under the dryer.
