IELTS Speaking 3 - Generating Questions

By the end of the lesson you should have a better awareness of different question types for part 3 of the speaking exam

Work with your teacher to look at the following functions used in Part 3 questions. Together, brainstorm or share examples of how we can express each one in English:

• Compare

• Describe

• Evaluate

• Justify

• Predict

• Express preferences

Form new pairs or groups and take turns asking and answering the questions you created.

• If you are in a group of three, one person can play the role of the examiner, asking questions and giving feedback.

Give longer, more developed answers than in earlier parts of the test.
Show your range of vocabulary and grammar – this is your chance to impress!
Focus on both ideas and language – the examiner is interested in how you think as well as how you speak.
Use strategic phrases when you need thinking time, e.g.

“That’s an interesting question — let me think for a moment.”
