Slide 8 - Tekstslide

I have no idea!?

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

Question!
Was Sam sad because of who stole her stuff or because her stuff was stolen?

Slide 10 - Tekstslide

Look at the sentences. What do they emphasize?

Someone stole my laptop
My laptop was stolen
Someone stole my watch
My watch was stolen
Someone stole my ring
My ring was stolen
Someone stole my phone
My phone was stolen
Someone stole my piggy bank
My piggy bank was stolen

Slide 11 - Tekstslide

The passive
Both sentences are correct.
But one emphasizes the action/result and one the person who did it.

We use the passive when we want to emphasize the action/result instead of the person who did it.
We use the passive when we don't know who did it / when it's not important who did it.
We do this by taking the object (Dutch: lijdend voorwerp) and putting it at the beginning of the sentence.

My laptop was stolen.
Someone stole my laptop

Slide 12 - Tekstslide

The passive - Present and past

Remember, you form the passive like this:
a form of to be (am, are, is, was, were) + past participle
