Prepositions

Voorzetsels, of prepositions, in het Engels zijn woorden die een relatie van tijd, richting, plaats en ruimtelijke relatie aangeven.

Voorzetsels in het Engels zijn ontzettend idiomatisch, dat betekend dat ze uniek zijn aan die taal. Daarom zijn ze erg moeilijk letterlijk te vertalen naar het Nederlands.

Het handigste is dan ook om de voorzetsels bij de meest gebruikte zinnen te leren.

Soorten voorzetsels

Zoals ik al zei zijn er verschillende soorten voorzetsels:

Prepositions of Direction

Dit zijn voorzetsels die een richting aangeven.

Zoals:

Ik ga naar de stad!

Die hebben we natuurlijk ook in het Engels !

Prepositions of Direction

1. I am going to the store

2. Welcome to my house! Come in.

3. Drive on the grass and park the car there

Prepositions of Direction

Een combinatie die we hebben is het combineren van "in" en "on" met "to":

into -> geeft een voorwaartse beweging en een beweging naar binnen aan

Onto -> geeft een voorwaartse beweging en een beweging over iets heen aan.

Prepositions of Time

Voorzetsels van tijd geven aan wanneer iets plaatsvind, plaats heeft gevonden óf gaat plaatsvinden. 

Hier zitten wat regels aan vast!

Prepositions of Time

Voor dagdelen, maanden, jaren en seizoenen gebruiken we het voorzetsel "in"

1. he reads in the evening

2. The weather is cold in December

3. She was born in 1996

4. we rake leaves in the fall

Prepositions of Time

Voor specifieke tijden of dagdelen zoals noon, night and midnight gebruiken we "at"

1. I go to work at  08:00

2. He eats lunch at Noon

3. She often goes for a walk at night

4. They go to bed at midnight

Prepositions of Time

Voor dagen gebruiken we "on"

1. I work on Saturdays
2. He does the dishes on Wednesdays

Prepositions of Time

Voor langere periodes van tijd zijn er wat meer voorbeelden.

Since, for, during, from....to, from...until, with, within

Die laten we voor nu eventjes; maar ze geven dus een langere periode van tijd aan

2. Mijn werk begint om acht uur 's ochtends.

Voorzetsels van plaats geven , logischerwijs, een plaats aan.

Deze voorzetsels hebben wat minder gestructureerde regels dan die van tijd.
