- Past tenses

Goal: After today, you will be able to distinguish between all the past tenses.

When

While

I was watching TV when the lights went out.

They were playing football at 5 p.m. yesterday.

When 

Before

Luckily, she had left the house before the storm started.

Before

He had been studying for hours before the exam began.

Past tenses

Past Continuous

One action interrupted by another (e.g., I was sleeping when the phone rang), or

Two actions happening at the same time (e.g., She was reading while he was cooking).

Past Perfect

One action was completed before another in the past. 

Past perfect continuous

Describes an action that had been ongoing for some time before another past action. It emphasizes the duration or continuity of the first action.

If one subject had to be removed from the school curriculum, which one would you get rid of?
