Gerund

At the end of the lesson you can apply the rules of the Gerund! 

Wat valt je op aan deze zinnen?

• Smoking is forbidden in the barbershop.
• I look forward to seeing you next week.
• Could you start doing your homework? 
• That dress isn't worth buying.
• He started running.

• -ing staat achter sommige woorden
• Vraag de leerlingen: Welk woord staat er voor? 

Gerund

Je gebruikt de '-ing vorm' als een soort zelfstandig naamwoord:

 1. Als het onderwerp van de zin.

Example: Biking in the mall is forbidden. 

2. Na voorzetsels. 
Example: She's fond of cycling.

3. Na werkwoorden die zeggen hoe je iets vindt. (like, love, hate, enjoy, etc.)

Example: I love going to the movies. 

Gerund

Je gebruikt de '-ing vorm' ook als een soort zelfstandig naamwoord:

1. Na werkwoorden die 'begin', 'einde', of 'doorgaan' aangeven. (start, begin, finish, go on, etc.)

Example: Everybody had finished writing. 

2. Na een aantal andere werkwoorden. (delay, postpone, put off, imagine, consider, avoid, etc) 

Example: I put off learning vocabulary for a whole week.

3. Na een aantal uitdrukkingen. (it's no good, it's no use, it's worth, can't help, to be busy, etc)

Example: She can't help singing all day long. 

Uitzondering

Na oa onderstaande werkwoorden kan je ook het hele werkwoord met 'to' gebruiken.

4. Like
5. Love
6. Hate
7. Prefer
8. Stop 

Bijvoorbeeld: I hate getting up early / I hate to get up early. (de betekenis is hetzelfde)

....(write) in English is easy.

I love ... (go) out to restaurants.

That make-up product isn't worth ... (buy)

I'm looking forward to ... (receive) your letter.

My mother considers ... (leave) Rob.

They suddenly stopped ... (run).

WHO

Gebruik je bij personen:

Aren't you the girl who sits next to Suzy? 

WHICH

Gebruik je bij dieren, dingen of plaatsen:

I live in Canterbury, which is in south of London. 

THAT

That kun je gebruiken i.p.v. who/which, maar alleen als het onderdeel van het onderwerp is. 

The man who visited my birthday is my father.

The man that visited my birthday is my father. 

These boys, who are learning about maths, are students.

who/which/that weglaten

Je kan who/that/which ook weglaten als het onderdeel van het onderwerp is en als  er een ondwerp + werkwoord achter staat:

That's the man who/that/- she met at the airport.

Maar: That is the singer who won an award.
