At the end of the lesson, you will be able to add two-digit numbers by adding the ones column first and then the tens column.

What do you already know about adding two-digit numbers?

Adding Ones First

To add 12 + 24, start with the ones column: 2 + 4 = 6.

Adding Tens Next

Next, add the tens column: 1 + 2 = 3. So, 12 + 24 = 36.

Example 1: 35 + 47

Add ones: 5 + 7 = 12. Write down 2, carry over 1. Add tens: 3 + 4 + 1 = 8. Result: 82.

Example 2: 58 + 26

Add ones: 8 + 6 = 14. Write down 4, carry over 1. Add tens: 5 + 2 + 1 = 8. Result: 84.
