• We are going to try out a few typical Greek definitions:
  Facial expressions / Gestures / in unison
• Spend 1 minute preparing together for each concept, then show your very very short performance!
• Find a spot in the room where you can work together and see the board.

You have one sentence to work with: "the king is sad". 

1'st performance: act out the sentence with ONLY FACIAL EXPRESSIONS 

2nd performance: add BIG GESTURES to your performance 

3rd performance: add movement to your performance but IN UNISON

Assignment for today

•  We practice with chorus (so not for a grade, but chorus will be part of your end assignment)
• Groups of 4/5 people
• Pick 1 situation from the next slide. 
• You react as a chorus to this situation:
  the chorus has at least 3 lines,
   you speak and move in unison,
  use facial expressions and big gestures! 

Situations to choose from

Mobile phones are banned at school — overnight, everyone has to hand in their phone at the entrance.

"How can we live without our screens?!"

Homework has doubled overnight - every teacher gives twice as much homework as before!

"We are students, not homework machines!"

1e uitvoering: speel de zin uit met ALLEEN MIMIEK (facial expressions)

2e uitvoering: voeg GROTE GEBAREN (big gestures) toe aan je spel

3e uitvoering: voeg BEWEGING toe aan je spel, maar doe dit TEGELIJK (IN UNISON)

Nu weet je wat een KOOR (CHORUS) is!

Opdracht voor vandaag

• We oefenen met de chorus (dus niet voor een cijfer, maar de chorus zal wel deel uitmaken van je eindopdracht).
• Groepen van 4 à 5 personen.
• Kies 1 situatie van de volgende dia.
• Reageer als chorus op deze situatie:
  De chorus heeft minstens 3 regels.
  Jullie spreken en bewegen in unison.
  Gebruik gezichtsuitdrukkingen en grote gebaren!

Greek Theater lesson 2

Today

We continue working with the chorus style from Greek theatre like we did last week.

You learn and apply three new drama words:

solo, repetition, and exaggeration.

Use these techniques in a short chorus performance about the theme injustice.

What do you remember about the greek chorus?

 For instance: moving together (unison), one voice, showing emotion, big gestures.

In Greek tragedies, the chorus often represented the people. They reacted to injustice — when someone misused power or when something unfair happened. Today we’ll explore that same theme

Assignment for today: chorus of injustice!

In groups of 4–5, create a short chorus performance (about 2 minutes) based on the theme 'injustice'.

Include 4 techniques:

At least one solo moment (one person speaks, the others are silent).
The rest of the chorus is in unison!

At least three repetitions (repeated word, line, or movement).

At least one exaggeration (strong facial expression or big movement).

Use clear facial expressions and gestures.

Optional closing line:

“Justice must be seen!” or “This is not fair!”

Examples injustice situations to choose from *or come up with your own!

• A student is blamed for something they didn’t do.
• People care more about likes than about what’s right or wrong.
• Different rules for siblings...
• Someone is judged because of how they look or dress.
• Power is abused by a leader, boss, or teacher.
• A friend spreads a rumor about you.
• Animals are mistreated for human comfort or profit.

Opdracht voor vandaag: het koor van het onrecht!

Werk in groepjes van 4–5 en maak een korte chorus-performance (ongeveer 2 minuten) rond het thema ‘onrecht’.

Gebruik vier technieken:

Minstens één solo-moment (één persoon spreekt, de rest blijft stil).

De rest van de chorus spreekt en beweegt in unisono.

Minstens drie herhalingen (van een woord, zin of beweging).

Minstens één overdrijving (sterke mimiek of grote beweging).

Use clear facial expressions and gestures.

Optional closing line:

“Justice must be seen!” or “This is not fair!”

Voorbeelden van onrecht-situaties om uit te kiezen –> of bedenk er zelf een!

• Een leerling krijgt de schuld van iets wat hij/zij niet heeft gedaan.
• Mensen geven meer om likes dan om wat goed of fout is.
• Verschillende regels voor broers en zussen…
• Iemand wordt beoordeeld op hoe hij/zij eruitziet of zich kleedt.
• Macht wordt misbruikt door een leider, baas of leraar.
• Een vriend verspreidt een gerucht over jou.
• Dieren worden slecht behandeld voor menselijk comfort of winst.

Today

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

• Work collaboratively in a small group to develop ideas for a Greek chorus performance.

• Brainstorm and plan a short performance based on the theme of injustice.
• Apply what you’ve learned about Greek theatre:

the role of the chorus, speaking and moving in unison, and

using big gestures and exaggeration to express emotion.

Test assignment

Teacher makes a group of 4–5 students.

You choose one injustice situation  (invent your own this time).

Start brainstorming:

Who is affected by the injustice?

What emotions does the chorus express?

What message do you want to give the audience?

Write a short outline or script (performance should last 3 minutes)

Repetition and exaggeration

Big gestures and facial expressions

Step 1: write a script by the following steps (20 min)

1. Decide what unfair situation your chorus will react to.
2. Decide the structure

Beginning: Show or describe the injustice.

Middle: The chorus reacts — with emotion, repetition, and movement.

End: Give a message or final statement (a warning, hope, or lesson).

   3. Write short lines

Keep sentences simple and powerful.

Use rhythm or repetition (e.g. “It’s not fair! It’s not fair!”).

Add at least three solo moments where one person speaks alone.
