Question 1 (page 51)
Hamlet considers 2 responses to the 'slings and arrows of outrageous fortune': to put up with them or end them by suicide. For what reasons does Hamlet reject suicide?

Slide 7 - Open vraag

Suicide would not actually end his troubles. At this point in the story (the middle of the third Act),
Hamlet is still in the process of discovering the truth. He still needs to sound Claudius out, and to
make good his promise to the ghost to avenge his father’s death. He fears that, although death is like
sleep, it would not be a peaceful sleep, but would be troubled by ‘dreams’. The dreams he fears
after death may be recollections of the problems he has left behind on earth, but are probably
nightmares about the consequences of his actions (in Shakespeare’s time, suicide was regarded as a
sin, which would prevent the soul from entering Heaven)
