  • an adjective says something about a noun
  • She is beautiful
  • She is wearing a beautiful dress

  • An adverb says something about a verb, an adjective or another adverb.
  • She sings beautifully
  • This castle is really old
  • The car drove extremely slowly

  • Forming an adverb: adjective + ly  (slow -> slowly)
  • When a word ends on a vowel+y, the end changes to -ily
  • funny -> funnily. Day -> daily
  • When a word ends on -le, the end changes to -ly
  • gentle -> gently
  • When a word ends on -ic, the end changes to -> icaly
  • automatic -> automaticaly
  • When a word ends on -ue, the end changes to -> uly
  • true -> truly
  • When a word ends on -ll, the end changes to -> lly
  • full -> fully

  • Before an adjective or another adverb
  • example: She works really seriously on e-zine

  • Before the main verb of the sentence
  • example: I can hardly believe my eyes

  • but after a form of to be (when there is one)
