Past simple vs Past continuous

Past simple

When do we use it?

Something happened in the past and is finished. 

> Often with time expressions in the sentence!: Last week/ Yesterday/....

How do we use it (positive)?

Verb+ed

What are the exceptions?

Irregular verbs!

The game started at 2 o’clock. 

He worked hard today. 

I bought a new phone (not buyed!)

Past simple

How do we use it (negative)?

Did + not + verb

How do we use it (questions)?

Did + personal pron. + verb

What is the exeption?

The verb “to be”

Use: was or were

The game did not start at 2 o’clock

He did not work hard today

Did I buy a new phone?

Did they leave early?

She was not happy with the news

Were they here for the first time?

Past continuous

When do we use it?

- Als iets in het verleden bezig was.

> vaak staat in de zin dat er (plotseling) iets anders gebeurde toen het bezig was.

bv. I was cycling to school when I heard a loud noise.

- Als je je ergerde aan iets wat vroeger steeds gebeurde.

> vaak woorden in de zin als always, constantly of forever.

bv. Maria was always shouting when she was young.

Past continuous

How do we use it?

Positive:

Was / were + ww + ing

Negative:

Was / were + not + ww + ing

Questions:

Was / were + ow + ww + ing

He was doing the dishes when the doorbell rang

They were not listening when the lesson started

Were you listening when the teacher asked you a question?

Writing practise

- Write a short email to a friend you have not seen in a while. Tell him/ her about something you experienced.

- Use at least three times the past continuous, with different verbs! (underline them)

- Use a salutation (aanhef) and a closing (afsluiting). 

Writing a letter

Tips:

- Na je aanhef (Dear ..... , ) en voor je afsluiting een witregel overslaan.

- Denk aan leestekens (punten, komma's etc.) en hoofdletters.

- I (= ik) is altijd met een hoofdletter!

- The Netherlands is ook met hoofdletters.

- Schrijf getallen (zoals leeftijden) voluit! 

- Zorg dat alles wat er in moet ook er in staat! (anders minpunten).

- Je mag de expressions gebruiken die je geleerd hebt.

- Kies een passende afsluiting zoals Kind regards of Best wishes.
