Chapter 8.2: Systematic names

Slide 1 - Tekstslide

Flashback
- What are monomers?
-What is a polymer?
- Can you draw the structural formula of a monomer with C6H12 as molecular formula?
- What is a branched monomer?
- What is a saturated monomer?

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

This hydrocarbon is
A
branched + saturated
B
branched + unsaturated
C
unbranched + saturated
D
unbranched + unsaturated

Slide 3 - Quizvraag

This hydrocarbon is
A
branched + saturated
B
branched + unsaturated
C
unbranched + saturated
D
unbranched + unsaturated

Slide 4 - Quizvraag

This hydrocarbon is
A
branched + saturated
B

Slide 6 - Quizvraag

Hydrocarbons

A substance that consists of only C and H atoms

There are different subgroups, for example the alkanes.

Slide 7 - Tekstslide

Alkanes
General formule
  • Alkane CnH2n+2

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

Slide 10 - Tekstslide

Wat is the name of
C4H10
A
Methane
B
Ethane
C
Propane
D
Butane

Slide 11 - Quizvraag

What is the name of the
structural formula:
A
heptane
B
hexane
C
nonane
D
octane

Slide 12 - Quizvraag

Wat is de molecular formula of octane?

Slide 13 - Open vraag

Isomers
  • molecules with same molecular formula, but different structure
  • Due to structure also different properties
C₄H₁₀                      C₄H₁₀
Butane            methyl-propane

Slide 14 - Tekstslide

Alkenes can be branched. Branched groups with only C and H atoms are called alkylgroups. Methyl for 1 x C, Ethyl for 2 x C etc.

Slide 15 - Tekstslide

Why is this the same molecule?
and not a isomer?

Slide 16 - Tekstslide

Draw two isomers of C5H12

Nomenclature
Step by step plan

1. Longest C- Chain (unbranched)
2. Sidechain: Methyl (-CH3) or ethyl (-C2H5) etc.
3. Number: Number longest C chain and tell which place the side chain have (as low as possible)

C₄H₁₀                      C₄H₁₀
Butaan            methyl-propaan

Slide 19 - Tekstslide

Slide 20 - Tekstslide

But what is the side chain is there more than once?
Use
di (2),
tri (3),
tetra (4),
penta (5)
 hexa (6).
Also in the numbers

2,2,4-trimethylpentane
C₄H₁₀                      C₄H₁₀
Butaan            methyl-propaan

Slide 21 - Tekstslide

What if you have more side chains
For example 1 methyl- and 1-ethyl
Alfabetic!

3-ethyl-2-methylpentane
C₄H₁₀                      C₄H₁₀
Butaan            methyl-propaan

Slide 22 - Tekstslide

Wat is de systematische naam van
A
2-methyl-3-ethylpentane
B
3-ethyl-2-methylpentane
C
4-methyl-3-ethylpentane
D
3-ethyl-4-methylpentane

Slide 23 - Quizvraag

What is the systematic name of:
A
2-methyl-3-ethylhexane
B
3-ethyl-2-methylhexane
