If and When (grammar 11)

• If betekent "als". Je gebruikt if als je nog niet zeker weet, of iets gaat gebeuren of om een voorwaarde aan te geven.
• You can still catch the train if you leave right now.

• When betekent "toen" of "wanneer". Je gebruikt when als je zeker weet dat iets gaat gebeuren
• I'll visit you when I'm in England next month.

Conditionals (als...dan)

Zero conditional:               Hoe: present simple - present simple

Wanneer: feit, wetenschappelijk bewezen, uitkomst staat vast

If you stand in the rain, you get wet.                           If you cut the tree, it falls down. 

First conditional:               Hoe: present simple - will/won't + hele ww

Wanneer: voorspelling, gaat waarschijnlijk gebeuren, logisch gevolg

If you marry him, you won't be happy.                        If we leave now, we will be in time 

Second conditional:         Hoe: past simple - would + hele ww

Wanneer: Hypothetisch, niet concreet, staat niet vast, "bedacht" 

If she left him, he would make her life hell.             If we won the lottery we would buy a big house
