If Holland plays against Gibraltar, they will beat them.

If Tije bakes an omelet, I will be impressed.

If H2a keeps up the good work, I will be a happy teacher.

Etc.

The second Conditional

After this lesson, you know how to use the second conditional to talk about imaginary things.

Check your knowledge:
We use the second conditional to...

1. talk about real situations in our future
2. talk about imaginary situations in the present and future
3. talk about real situations at present
4. talk about imaginary situations in our past

We form the second conditional with

1. if + past simple, would + infinitive
2. if + present simple, would + past tense
3. If + past perfect, would + infinitive
4. If + past simple, would + past simple

A correct example of the second conditional is..

1. If she went to the police sooner, the thief had been caught.
2. The house smells good if my mom bakes a cake.
3. If I had a dog, I would walk in the park every day.
4. The house would smell good if my mom bakes a cake.

Second conditional

We use the second conditional to talk about hypothetical (imaginary) present/future situations.

We use the structure: If + subject + past verb, subject + would + infinitive

E.g.: If Tim watered his plants more often, they wouldn't die. 

              If    S        PV                                                     ,   S     would      INF             

If I won 10 million in the lottery,	I would...
If I ruled the world,	I would...
If I were a bird,	I would...
If ...	...
