Slide 2 - Tekstslide

  • is used with time expressions referring back to a finished  period of time. (clear indication of past time)

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

Two types of verbs:
Verbs can be divided into regular and irregular verbs.

Regular verbs form their past tense by adding -ed to the base.
Irregular verbs change in spelling.

Slide 4 - Tekstslide

How to form Regular verbs
  • by adding -ed to the base of the verb.
  • by adding only -d if the base already ends in -e.

The past tense of regular verbs is the same for all persons singular and plural.

I/you/he/she/it/we/you/they -> worked
I/you/he/she/it/we/you/they -> changed

Slide 5 - Tekstslide

Slide 7 - Tekstslide

Spelling rules before -ed
Before -ed the following spelling changes occur:
  • 'y' changes into 'i'                                       example:   deny -> denied

When a verb ends in a consonant + y:
  • the 'y' changes into 'i'                              example: study -> studied

BUT, there is no change when 'y' is preceded by a vowel letter!
play -> played

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

Spelling rules before -ed
A final consonant is doubled when it is preceded by one stressed vowel letter. (so, verbs ending in one stressed vowel + one consonant)
                                   stop     -> stopped                  regret  -> regretted
                                   prefer  -> preferred               shop     -> shopped
                                   plan      -> planned                  refer      -> referred
But:
book -> booked (2 vowel letters)
answer -> answered (not preceded by a stressed vowel letter)
