BS5.4 Evolution

Slide 1 - Tekstslide

Who is this?

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

Learning goal
You can describe the theory of evolution.

Slide 5 - Video

natural selection
Evolution
The development of life on Earth, with species appearing and changing and/or disappearing
Species (soorten) that are better addapted to their environment survive and produce more offspring (nakomelingen).
Giraffes with long necks have a higher chance to survive and therefore reproduce

Slide 6 - Sleepvraag

Evolution in Steps
  1. There is variation between individuals within one species 'genetic variation'.
  2. Individuals with an advantage have a higher chance of surviving ' natural selection'
  3. The individuals that survive will have a higher chance to produce offspring

Slide 11 - Quizvraag

Wat is de beste omschrijving van evolutie?
A
Evolutie is een geleidelijke ontwikkeling, waarbij steeds ingewikkelder gebouwde organismen ontstaan.
B

Recap
The desert fox is descended from the common foxes that live in temperate climates. Long ago, a group of foxes went into the Sahara and evolved into the desert fox. Explain how the evolution into a desert fox progressed.

Use the following terms in your explanation: genotype – mutation – natural selection – variation

Slide 15 - Tekstslide

Answer
There was variation in foxes. Variation in genotype is caused for example by mutations. Variation in genotype meant that some animals had favourable characteristics for surviving in the desert. These favourable characteristics were passed on to the next generations. Animals with more favourable characteristics survived and were able to reproduce. Natural selection gradually changed the species.
