The Eardrum

Sound waves hit the eardrum, causing it to vibrate. This marks the start of the sound journey through the middle ear.

The Middle Ear

The middle ear contains three tiny bones: malleus, incus, and stapes. These bones amplify vibrations from the eardrum.

The Cochlea

The cochlea is a spiral-shaped organ filled with fluid. Vibrations from the stapes create waves in this fluid.

Hair Cells

Tiny hair cells in the cochlea move with the fluid waves. This movement creates electrical signals.

The Auditory Nerve

Electrical signals travel along the auditory nerve to the brain, where they are interpreted as sound.

Sound Pathway Summary

Sound travels from the outer ear, through the middle ear, into the cochlea, and finally to the brain.
