How is this treaty impacting Indigenous peoples and settlers today?
The treaty signed in 1779 was set up so that the Mi'kmaq and Maliseet First Nations could continue to have treaty rights to hunt, fish and gather. The original treaty, however, did not include surrendering the lands and resources. This impact indigenous peoples because they didn't give consent for the government to take their land and the settlers are living on it.
