Reference words
= referentiewoorden

We use reference words so we don’t repeat the same words. 

 In addition we also use them to refer to different parts of a text. We often we refer back to an earlier part of a text but we can also refer forward in the text.

Common types of of reference words

Personal pronouns: it, they, them, his, him:
  • These are Kim and Jack. They are married, but do not get along well
  • I think your teacher is nice. Why don’t you like him

Demonstratives: this, that, those ->
Those people over there are colleagues of my mother


Relative pronouns: which, whose, where ->
Jim works for an organization which helps startup new companies.

Determiners: some, others, another 
-> There are so many apples left. Can I have some?
