Planten hebben koolstof nodig voor fotosynthese, hiervoor nemen zijn koolstofdioxide (CO2) op. Zij zetten dit om naar energierijk glucose (C6 H12 O6). Dit word verbrand door alle levende wezens, daarmee zetten zij het weer om naar CO2.
