Why do we learn this? In our culture we like to keep our communication very short.. This is considered to be impolite (onbeleefd) if you do this when you're talking to someone from an English-speaking country.

How do you reply politely? 
Hoe beantwoord je een vraag met 'ja' of 'nee' op een beleefde manier in het Engels? 
-Je herhaalt het werkwoord in de vraag (dat is het eerste woord; dit is dikgedrukt in de voorbeeldzinnen hieronder); 
-Je zegt dus heel simpel:  yes/no (gevolgd door een komma)
-En dan het pers. voornaamw. (I,you,he,she,it,we,they) 
-En dan het werkwoord waarmee de vraag van iemand anders begon; (met eventueel 'n't/ not') 

Do you often work out?  - Yes, I do
Did your sister leave her wallet in the bus? - No, she didn't. / did not
Are your parents going on a holiday to Spain? - Yes, they are

Watching 'Freedom Writers'
We're going to watch a film called: 'Freedom Writers'. It's a film about an inner-city school (a school typically located in a poor region/ part of a city in The United States). Many students in the film struggle with their daily lives. In the first ten minutes the characters and the setting will be introduced, so take your time to select one student you're going to focus on...
