What is Scanning?

Scanning is a reading strategy where you move your eyes quickly down the page, searching for specific words or information without reading everything.

Step 1: Establish Your Purpose

Know exactly what you are looking for in the text. Are you searching for a date, a key word, or a particular fact?

Step 2: Scan for Key Information

Move your eyes quickly to find symbols, keywords, dates, or names. Don’t get distracted by irrelevant details.

Step 3: Understand the Structure

Check how the information is organised. Is it in order of time, importance, or categories? This helps you find your answer quickly.

Look at tables, charts, or bullet points. Visual aids can help you find information instantly and make sense of the text faster.
