The Enlightenment
Social
  • Criticism of inequality of the (estate-based) society. All were born with natural rights. Rights everybody has from birth. Nobody is allowed to violate the rights of others, such as the right to freedom, health and property.
  • Freedom, for example the freedom of speech, press freedom, freedom of religion or freedom of trade.
  • Equality, for example equality before law, gender equality, equality for slave and non-slave or even abolition of slavery.

Revolts and uprisings
New ideas led to unrest in colonies. Slaves started to resist.

  • 1791-1804 Haitian Revolution 
Uprising of self-liberated slaves in the French colony.
  • 1795 Curaçao Slave Revolt 
Failed uprising in Dutch colony.

Movement to end slavery.

Two causes:
1) Some people thought all man should be equal 
and free.  Slavery and slave trade violated the rights of man.
2) More and more people considered slavery and the slave trade cruel and inhumane.

1807 Britain banned slave trade

1833 Britain abolished slavery

1863 Netherlands abolished slavery
Slaves had to work ten more years on the plantation.
