Verb patterns
There are certain rules you have to follow when using 2 verbs in a sentence.
Examples:
I want to explain this to you
I enjoy watching football

Slide 24 - Tekstslide

Infinitive Patterns:
Some verbs are followed by the infinitive form (to + verb), such as "want," "need," and "decide".

I want to read this book

Slide 25 - Tekstslide

Gerund Patterns:
Other verbs are followed by the -ing form, such as "enjoy," "mind," and "stop".

Slide 26 - Tekstslide

Mixed Patterns:
Certain verbs can be followed by either an infinitive or a gerund, often with a change in meaning ("stop to do" vs. "stop doing").

Example on next slide

I stopped to do some groceries: Gestopt om boodschappen te doen

I stopped doing groceries: Gestopt met boodschappen doen

Slide 29 - Tekstslide

Object Patterns
Some verbs require an object before the infinitive (e.g., "I want him to go")

I need you to do your homework

Slide 30 - Tekstslide

Common Verbs
Verbs like "make" and "let" are followed by the infinitive without "to" ("She made me cry").
