Why Study Skills Matter?

  • Traditional study methods (re-reading, highlighting) yield only 10-20% retention

  • Evidence-based techniques can improve learning outcomes.

  • To counteract forgetting and improve long-term memory, strategies like spaced learning, regular review, self-testing, and applying information in meaningful ways are essential.

  • Success isn't about working harder—it's about working smarter

The forgetting curve describes the exponential decline of memory retention over time, a concept first observed by psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus. It shows information is rapidly forgotten after initial learning, with retention dropping sharply in the first few hours and days

Evidence-Based Study Strategies

  • Connecting new information to existing knowledge improves retention

  • Learning and reviewing material can be more effective when spread over time

  • Challenge your brain- ask questions.

Tips on how to study effectively

The Problem with Traditional Reading

  • Passive scanning: Eyes move, brain doesn't engage

  • Illusion of knowing: Familiarity mistaken for understanding

  • Poor retention: Information doesn't transfer to long-term memory

  • No connection: New information remains isolated

Active Reading Strategies

  • Survey:

    • Scan chapter headings, subheadings, and summaries

    • Look at charts, graphs, images, and captions

    • Read the first and last paragraphs

    • Identify the chapter's main structure and goals

  • Question:

    • Convert headings into questions

    • Example: ”Anatomy of Normal Chest X-ray”

→ "What anatomical structures should I identify on a normal chest X-ray?"

Active Reading Strategies

  • Read:

    • Read actively with pen in hand

    • Don't just highlight—interact with the text

    • Look for answers to your pre-generated questions

    • Pause after each major concept to ensure understanding

  • Recite:

    • Summarize key points without looking at the text

    • Describe imaging findings in your own words

    • Explain concepts to an imaginary patient or colleague


Active Reading Strategies

  • Review (within 24 hours):

    • Go over your notes and key points

    • Connect new information to previously learned material

    • Identify areas that need more study


Advanced Engagement Techniques

  • Reading comprehension strategies

    • Preview vocabulary: Look up unfamiliar terms before reading

    • Chunk information: Break long sections into manageable parts

  • Marginal Note-Taking

    • Summary phrases: Capture main idea of each paragraph

Why Most Note-Taking Fails?

  • Transcription trap: Writing down everything without processing

    • No organization: Random facts with no structure

    • Review difficulty: Notes that make no sense later

    • Passive process: No active engagement with material


  • Example of effective note-taking:

    • “Pneumonia is an infection that inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs, which may fill with fluid or pus...”


  • Pneumonia – infection of lungs → fluid in air sacs → symptoms: fever, cough, chest pain.


Strategies for Effective Note-Taking

Taking good notes helps you remember what you have learned through readings and lectures.

Quality notes are a valuable tool to use while studying and preparing for exams.

1. The Cornell Method

  • The Cornell method of note-taking was created by Walter Pauk, a professor at Cornell, in the 1950s.

  • Divide your page into 3 sections (as shown in the figure): Notes, Cues and Summary

  1. During class/reading: Take notes only in the right column

    1. Within 24 hours: Fill in cue column with key terms and question

    2. Weekly review: Use cue column to test yourself

    3. Before exams: Focus on summary sections for quick review

2. The Outline Method

  • A note-taking strategy for organizing information into a hierarchical structure of main topics, subtopics, and supporting details, using indentations and symbols like Roman numerals or letters to show relationships and importance.

  • It creates a skeletal overview of a subject, making it easy to see key points and connections between them, which helps with studying and review

3. The Mind Mapping Method

  • Mind mapping is an effective method for generating ideas by association.

  • In order to create a mind map, you usually start in the middle of the page with the central theme/main idea and from that point you work outward in all directions to create a growing diagram composed of keywords, phrases, concepts, facts and figures.

How do I use mind mapping?

  • Taking notes in a lecture and listening for the most important points or keywords

  • showing links and relationships between the main ideas in your subject

  • brainstorming all the things you already know about an essay question

  • planning the early stages of an essay by visualising all the aspects of the question

  • organising your ideas and information by making it accessible on a single page

  • stimulating creative thinking and creative solutions to problems

  • reviewing learning in preparation for a test or examination.

4. The Charting Method

  • A note-taking technique that organizes information into a table with columns and rows, to make comparisons and identify relationships between topics

  • This method is excellent for subjects with structured information, comparing facts and statistics, and synthesizing information from multiple sources, making review and memorization easier.

Why handwriting works better:

  • Forces you to process and summarize information

  • Engages different brain pathways than typing

  • Physical act reinforces memory formation

Choose digital note-taking for:

  • Fast-paced lectures where keeping up is difficult

  • Subjects requiring extensive diagrams (with drawing apps)

  • Collaborative work where sharing is essential

Effective Summarization

  • Effective summarization involves extracting and rephrasing the most important information from a text to create a concise, accurate, and objective overview.

  • The core skills involve identifying the main ideas, filtering out unnecessary details, and presenting the information in your own words.

  • Why summarization is important?

    • Forces active processing of information

    • Identifies gaps in understanding

    • Creates efficient review materials

    • Develops critical thinking skills

The 3-Level Summarization Technique

  • Level 1: Initial summary (50-25% of content)

    • Highlight the most important concepts during first reading

    • Focus on main ideas, not supporting details

  • Level 2: Focused summary (15% of content)

    • Review Level 1 highlights and bold the most critical information

    • These should be the absolute key points

  • Level 3: Executive Summary (10-5% of content)

    • Create a brief summary using only the bold highlights

    • This becomes your primary review material

Example

  • Level 1: "Pulmonary embolism can present with various imaging findings including wedge-shaped opacities, pleural effusions, Hampton's hump, and Westermark sign. The most sensitive imaging modality is CT pulmonary angiogram (CTPA) which can directly visualize the clot within pulmonary vessels."

  • Level 2: "Pulmonary embolism imaging findings: wedge-shaped opacities, Hampton's hump, Westermark sign. CTPA most sensitive - directly visualizes clot."

  • Level 3: "PE: CTPA gold standard, look for wedge opacity, Hampton's hump"


Synthesis and making connections

  • Synthesis is the act of connecting and integrating ideas, theories, and findings from multiple disciplinary sources to create a new, overarching perspective or a deeper understanding of a topic.

  • It involves more than just summarizing; instead, you must identify connections, potential disagreements, and gaps within the sources, ultimately forming your own cohesive narrative or argument.

  • This process requires critical thinking and is crucial in academic writing for demonstrating a comprehensive grasp of a subject and its broader context. 

Synthesis goes beyond summarization

  • Summarizing: involves condensing the main points of a source without adding new interpretations or connections

  • Synthesizing: goes a step further by interpreting sources, explaining their relationships to each other, identifying themes across them, and applying them to your own research

    • allows deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the topic

    • integrates diverse perspectives into a coherent argument
