Reactivity Series: Displacement Reactions

What do you already know about metals reacting with other substances?

Ionic bonding vs Covalent

Involves the sharing of electrons

Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson you will be able to describe and explain single displacement reactions, use the reactivity series to predict outcomes, and write word equations for these reactions.

What is the Reactivity Series?

The reactivity series is a list of metals arranged by how easily they react. It helps us predict which metals will react with others in chemical reactions.

Fill in the blanks

A displacement reaction occurs when a more reactive element displaces a less reactive element from a compound. For example mangesium + copper oxide --> magnesium oxide + copper.

Defining Displacement Reactions

A displacement reaction is when a more reactive metal replaces a less reactive metal from its compound.

Important Terms

- Reactivity: How easily a metal reacts. - Element: A pure substance made of one type of atom. - Compound: Two or more elements bonded together.

Single Displacement Example

If iron nails are placed in copper sulphate solution, iron is more reactive than copper, so iron will displace copper, forming iron sulphate and copper metal.

Word Equation of a Displacement Reaction

metal A + compound of B → compound of A + metal B

Example

Iron + Copper sulphate → Iron sulphate + Copper

General Formula

Using the Reactivity Series

You can use the reactivity series to check if a displacement reaction will happen. Only a more reactive metal will displace a less reactive one from its compound.

Common Displacement Reactions

Other examples include magnesium displacing zinc from zinc sulphate, and zinc displacing copper from copper sulphate. Always check the positions in the reactivity series first.
