Adjectives and adverbs

Adjectives = Bijvoeglijke naamwoorden

• Zegt iets over een zelfstandig naamwoord of persoon, dier of ding
  She is beautiful, what a beautiful horse,...

Adverbs = Bijwoorden

• Zegt iets over een werkwoord (hoe iets gebeurt), of een bijvoeglijk naamwoord, of een ander bijwoord. Het gaat dan om 'hoe'.
  She danced beautifully. He is very succesful. He moved quickly

Als het niet iets zegt over een zelfstandig naamwoord is het dus een bijwoord

Adverbs ending in -Y

For adjectives that end in -y, we remove the -y and add -ily:

crazy  -  crazily 

happy  -  happily

Adverbs ending in -LE

For adjectives that end in a consonant + le we remove the -e and add -y:

terrible  -  terribly 

horrible  -  horribly

noble  -  nobly

idle -  idly

Adverbs ending in -IC

If the adjective ends in -ic, we add -ally:

ironic  -  ironically

enthusiastic  -  enthusiastically

realistic  -  realistically

Except: public  -  publicly

Irregular Adverbs

Some adverbs are irregular:

 

fast - fast     The man drives very fast (quickly).

good - well   You speak English very well.
Long-long not longly
Low-low

Adverbs of frequency to tell how often/regularly something happens

- before VERB: Sometimes, Always, Never, Usually, Often, Hardly ever

We sometimes LISTEN to the teacher.

- after VERB: when main verb is TO BE

We ARE hardly ever quiet in class.

Adverbs of frequency

subject + adverb of frequency + main verb

subject + form of to be + adverbs of frequency + rest of the sentence

Waar staan adverbs of frequency?

You always walk to school             -> komt voor het werkwoord

I am sometimes late for school  -> komt na het werkwoord to be

I have never walked to school    -> komt tussen 2 w.w.
