The past perfect continuous tense shows that an action that started in the past continued up until another time in the past.

- It had been raining hard for several hours and the streets were very wet.

- We had been trying to open the door for five minutes when Jane found her key.

How to make the past perfect continuous.

It consists of two things:

1. the past perfect of the verb To Be -> had been

2. Verb + ing -> walking

I had been walking for hours when I found the small shop.

They had been trying to get inside when the police showed up.

You make questions in the past perfect continuous by moving had to the front of the sentence.

I had been working for eight hours when my mother called.

Had I been working for eight hours?
