vs past simple?

Can you explain when to use each?

Past perfect 

had + voltooid deelwoord /past participle

Voltooid deelwoord/past participle: 

• verb + ed (played, kicked)
• irregular verbs --> 3rd row (seen, thought)

When to use?

• When something happens before another past event.
  -->  when we entered the cinema, the film had already started
  De past perfect staat vaak samen met een past simple in een zin / The past perfect is often used together with the past simple in a sentence. 

• Signaalwoorden: after, before, when & as soon as 

PAST PERFECT:
Which sentence uses the Past Perfect?

1. I was waiting for hours before he came.
2. I have waited for hours before he came.
