Principal Parts of Verbs 
Most verbs are regular
  • Regular verbs follow a specific pattern
  • Regular present verbs end with "s" or "es"  for the third person (he, she, it). 
  • Regular present participle verbs add "verb to be" + "ing".
  • Regular past verbs end with "d" or "ed". 
  • Regular past participle verbs include "have" or "had" and end with "e" or "ed"

Some verbs are irregular
  • Irregular verbs DON'T follow a predictable pattern. 
  • Irregular present verbs just like regulars end with "s" or "es" for the third person. 
  • Irregular present participle verbs just like regulars add "verb to be" + "ing".
  • Irregular past verbs have no predictable pattern. 
  • Irregular past participle verbs include "have" or "had" and have no predictable pattern.

Regular Verbs

  • Present: Petter asks her to be quiet.
  • Present participle: They are asking if there is more food.
  • Past: Mr. Dussel asked to be left alone.
  • Past Participle: Ms. Van Daan had asked for her coat. 
Irregular Verbs: 

  • Present: Anne writes in her diary every night. 
  • Present participle: She was writing about her experiences. 
  • Past: Mr. Frank wrote a list of items.
  • Past participle: Margot had written in her book.
