Learning Objective
At the end of the lesson you will be able to read both analogue and digital clocks, understand the difference between hours and minutes, and tell the time to the nearest hour, half hour, and quarter hour.

What do you already know about reading clocks?
What Is a Clock?
A clock is a device used to measure and show time. There are two main types: analogue (with hands) and digital (with numbers).
Parts of an Analogue Clock
The main parts are the face, the numbers 1 to 12, the hour hand (short), and the minute hand (long). Sometimes there's a thin second hand.
What Are Hours?
A day is divided into 24 hours. Each number on the clock face represents one hour. The short hand shows the hours.
What Are Minutes?
Each hour is made of 60 minutes. The long hand shows minutes, pointing to the minute marks around the clock.
How to Read O'Clock Times
When the minute hand points to 12, we say it is o'clock. For example, if the hour hand is on 3 and minute hand on 12, it's 3 o'clock.
What Is Half Past?
When the minute hand points to 6, it's half past the hour. For example, if the hour hand is between 7 and 8 and minute hand on 6, it's half past 7.
What Is Quarter Past?
If the minute hand is on the 3, it's quarter past the hour. For example, quarter past 9 means the minute hand is on 3, and the hour hand is just after 9.
What Is Quarter To?
When the minute hand points to 9, it's quarter to the next hour. For example, quarter to 11 means 10:45.
Reading Digital Clocks
Digital clocks use numbers to show hours and minutes. For example, 08:00 is 8 o'clock, 14:30 is half past 2 in the afternoon.
Understanding AM and PM
AM means morning (midnight to noon). PM means afternoon and evening (noon to midnight).
How Many Minutes Past Each Number?
3 is quarter past (15), 6 is half past (30), 9 is quarter to (45).
Quick Reference
Each number counts by 5s. 1 = 5 past, 2 = 10 past, up to 12 = 0 or 60 minutes.

Why Do We Need to Tell Time?
Using Clocks in Real Life
We use clocks to be on time for school, meals, sports, TV shows, and going to bed.
Practise: What Time Is It?
Look at the clock. Can you tell what time it is? Let's try telling the time together.
Practise: Digital Times
What time is shown here? Is it morning or evening? Try to read the digital clock.
Activity: Match the Clocks
Match each analogue clock to the correct digital clock. Work with a friend for this activity.
Time for a Story!
Fun Fact: The Oldest Clock
The oldest working clock in the world is over 600 years old and is in England. It has no face—just a bell that rings.
Check Your Learning
Can you now tell the time on both analogue and digital clocks? Practise at home and test yourself!
