Sometimes we write sentences and the SUBJECT of the sentences DOES NOT DO THE ACTION.

Last week, my car was repaired .

My car did not do the action (repair). 
The mechanic did that. But it's not that important who did it. In my message 'my car' and the fact it was repaired, is important. 

Mijn auto werd gerepareerd.

In het Nederlands, is het hulpww. voor de passieve zin : worden. 

Als het 'verleden tijd' is >> werd/werden.  We passen dus het hulpww. aan.
Het hoofdww. is altijd 'voltooid deelwoord'. 

My car was repaired.

In English, the helping verb (or auxiliary) is  'be'. 

If it's about the past, we use simple past >> was/were 
So, we change the tense of the 'helping verb'  

The main verb (= the actual action) is always 
past participle (= voltooid deelwoord)
