what PROOF does a passenger have to show that they checked in baggage?

why do you attach a "heavy label" to a suitcase that is heavier than 23 kilos?

1. to prove that it's paid excess baggage
2. if you don't, the baggage system could be damaged
3. for the protection of the baggage handlers
4. to recognise the baggage as "odd size"

• This dog must be transported in a kennel in the baggage hold. Except for "emotional support dogs", "assistant dogs" and "rescue dogs", but he may NEVER be seated on a passenger seat.

why do we let the flightcrew (de cockpitbemanning) know that an animal is being loaded in the hold?

1. as checked-in baggage at no extra costs
2. in the cabin as extra hand baggage

a PGSA...

• is constantly alert with regards to security matters and dangerous goods;
• asks questions about  the passenger's baggage (we call these "security questions");
• makes the passengers aware of the rules concerning dangerous goods and objects.

FAA

= Federal Aviation Administration

this organisation is responsible for making the rules and regulations for flight safety matters.

a PGSA's role concerning 

dangerous goods

• during the full service check-in you ask the passenger 4 security questions  about his/her baggage (we will talk about these later)
• with these questions, you contribute to the safety of aviation
• if a passenger answers "no"  to 1 of these 4 questions, you call in your superior
• this superior temporarily takes over the conversation to decide if the passenger may be checked-in.

what could you use?

• left you see a PGSA with a list.
• this list is the "dangerous goods card" with information regarding to what's allowed and what's not.

• what must be checked in?
• what's completely prohibited to take along in a plane?

• In this case the security questions are asked as well.

dangerous goods (DG): 

... are goods and substances that may cause problems/danger during transport. They are a potential risk for:

• health
• safety
• property
• environment

IATA

International Air Transport Association

distinguishes 2 types of labels:

hazard labels

(gevaren etiket)

handling labels

(behandelings etiket)

electronic devices and  

lithium batteries

• mobile phones, laptops and tablets are powered by a  lithium battery (a rechargable battery).
• at high temperatures this battery may catch fire or explode at high altitudes. 
• because of this portential hazard airlines regulate the transport of electronic devices with a lithium battery.

prohibited items and substances

• IATA has compiled a list of objects and substances that cannot be carried in cabin or hold baggage (prohibited items).
• A passenger carrying these may cause injury to a person or endanger the safety of the aircraft.
