Note:  you have to write 2 summaries for your portfolio: for assignments 4 and 7 (today's writing assignment)

 Purpose of a summary
  • To give the reader a clear, objective picture of the original text.
  • Restates the main points of a text without giving too many examples.

Guidelines for writing a summary

Guidelines for writing a summary
  • Take notes while reading.
  • State the main ideas of the article.
  • Identify the most important details that support the main ideas.
  • Write in own words; do not copy phrases.
  • Express the main meaning of the article, no details.

Introduction of your summary should include:
  • Introduction paragraph
  • Start with a summary or overview of the article which includes the author’s name and the title of the article.
  • Finish with the main idea of the article.

Body of your summary should include:  (1/2)
Body Paragraphs
  • The number of paragraphs in your summary depends on the length of the original article.
  • You will likely write between4-6 paragraphs.
  • Your summary should be 500 words (+/- 10%)

For a multi-paragraph summary
  • Discuss each supporting point in 1 separate paragraph.
  • Start each body paragraph with a topic sentence.
  • Each paragraph focuses on a separate main idea and the most important details related to that idea.
  • Put the ideas from the article into your own words.
  • Use linking words (verbindende zinnen/woorden) to connect ideas.
  • Check the internet / Moodle for examples of linking words in English.

  • Concluding paragraph
  • Summarize the main idea and the underlying meaning of the article.
  • Again, use of linking words is crucial in writing summaries.

5 tips for writing a summary. 

Writing assignment 7 - Summarize an article about Responsible Tourism
  • You will read the article called The Future of Travel and Tourism in your syllabus on pp 12-14.  
  • The article is quite long, over 1200 words.
  • You will write a shorter summary to represent the content in about 500 words, +/- 10%.
  • You use a neutral tone of voice.
  • You are NOT allowed to copy entire sentences from the text.

Summary article Responsible Tourism
Use the following constructions in your article:
A.    a verb in the correct form after a preposition
B.    a verb in the correct form after a modal verb
C.     a verb in the correct form after It + is + adjective
D.    a verb in the correct form after a verb from this list: 
decide / expect / be able / afford
Under your summary: make a little list of these letters (A-D), followed by the phrase from your text where you have used this construction in your summary.

Make sure you use the following constructions in your summary about Responsible Tourism:
A)   A verb in the correct form after a preposition
  • -ing form after preposition
  • a verb after a preposition, must be in -ing form. (no infinitive)
  • So, for example, we say: I will call you after arriving at the office.

B)   A verb in the correct form after a modal verb (hulpende werkwoorden)
  • Modal verb examples:  like, can, will, could, shall, must, would, might, may and should. 
  • After a modal verb, the root form(infinitive) of a verb is generally used.
  • Example: He might change jobs in the near future.

Make sure you use the following constructions in your summary about Responsible Tourism:
C)   A verb in the correct form after It + is + adjective
  • Example:  It is hard to keep up to speed with all the developments in the tourism industry.

D)   A verb in the correct form after a verb from this list:   decide / expect / be able / afford
  • Verbs are followed by to + infinitive
  • Example: Please decide to attend the concert or not.

Again:  Under your summary: make a little list of these letters (A-D), followed by the phrase from your summary where you have used this construction.

- Both:  Attempt/forget/stopped/go
