1. Predicting content

Predicting content - Trying to predict what an audio/video fragment is going to be about before hearing/watching it.

You see a picture of a man standing in front of a large map with suns/clouds/raindrops on it. What do you expect the fragment to be about?

2. Listening for gist

Listening for gist - Seeing the whole picture through the use of content words.

Content words all have their own meaning but when put together create a bigger picture.

What would this fragment be about?

'sunny day' 'school' 'event' 'sports'.

3. Detecting signposts

Detecting signposts - Signposts are words that help us follow the story we're listening to. Give reason, show order, etc.

"I am going to talk about 4 reasons why..." "The first..." "The second..." etc.

4. Listening for details

Listening for details - As the name suggests this is where you listen for any details in the fragment. You listen to the entire fragment and pick out words that are important to answer your question. You start actively listening when you hear those signal words.

5. Inferring meaning

Inferring meaning - Gathering as much knowledge and details from the fragment out of the unspoken language. 

Tone/body language/emotion/etc.

In a foreign country you go out for dinner and hand the waiter your card to pay. He hands it backs and says something apologetically.

Spoken interaction

Spoken interaction is producing language in a conversation with someone else.

This includes asking and answering questions, giving opinions, interviewing, debating and having a conversation.

New colleague

You are going to hold a conversation with a new colleague who only speaks English. You are both going to introduce yourself and discus a few topics that you find on its learning. 

Your conversation needs to be 4+ minutes long.
