Can & To be able to

Mindkettő jelentése: tudni, képesnek lenni

Viszont a 'can' egy nagyon különleges ige. 

Egyrészt kizárólag jelen és múlt alakja van ('can' és 'could'), minden egyéb formája hiányzik (to-s, -inges, stb.)

Ebből kifolyólag nem tudjuk olyan igeidőkben használni, amikor ezekre lenne szükség. Ilyenkor jön képbe a helyettese, a 'to be able to' szerkezet:

   I couldn't make dinner.

   I haven't been able to make dinner, so let's order something.

Can & To be able to (folytatás)

Másrészt a 'can' egy ún. modális ige. Sokszor lenne rá szükségünk egy mondatban a jelentése miatt, de ha már van ott egy modális ige (ami átvette már a segédige szerepét), akkor még egy nem kerülhet a mondatba, ilyenkor is a helyettesét, a 'to be able to' szerkezetet használjuk:

I would be able to drink a vodka if I hadn't drunk four already.

De miért?!

Felmerülhet a kérdés, hogy ha a 'to be able to' szerkezet mindenhol használható, akkor miért bonyolítjuk két opcióval az életünket. A válasz egyszerű, hiszen a 'can' sokkal rövidebb, egyszerűbb, mint az említett hosszú szerkezet, létjogosultsága ebben rejlik.

Translate the following sentences!

Eugén nagyon tehetséges, hat nyelven tud beszélni.

Nem tudtam megcsinálni tegnap, így neked kell ma.

Amikor tíz éves voltam, nem tudtam úszni.

Fáradt vagyok. Nem tudtam mostanában jól aludni.

Ludmilla csak jövő nyáron fog tudni velünk jönni nyaralni.

Tudok segíteni neked, ha akarod.

Attól tartok, nem fogok tudni jönni a buliba.

Mielőtt megvettem a jegyet, nem tudtam belépni a kiállításra.

Think of an object, machine, etc. and try to make the others find it out by telling sentences with 'can' or 'be able to' when you desrible it.

Eg: (oven) --> You can cook delicious food in it. You are also able to heat with it, but it's not too economical. You can find it in the kitchen.
