Menstrual cycle: a timeline

  • 28 days on average
  • day 1-day 4: menstruation: shedding of the uterus lining
  • Follicular phase: between menstruation and ovulation
  • around day 14: ovulation: bursting of follicle in the ovary
  • most fertile period
  • Luteal phase: between ovulation and menstruation

day 5-day 13: follicular phase
  • Follicular phase: follicle grows and matures in ovary
  • Ovulation: Ripe follicle bursts and ovum is released
  • Ovulation is triggered by a hormone (LH)
  • Estrogen causes the uterus lining to grow thicker

  • luteal phase: uterus prepares for implantation (lesson 3.2)
  • progesterone: causes the uterus lining to get more glands and more blood vessels
  • remnant of the follicle in ovary is producing the progesterone
  • this remnant is called: corpus luteum / yellow body
  • menstruation is caused by a LACK of progesterone 
  • corpus luteum is degenerating
