Active vs passive voice
What's the difference?

Active voice: focus ligt op wie de actie doet.
I do the dishes.
Passive voice: focus ligt op de actie.
The dishes are done (by me).

When to use the passive voice?

1. Wanneer niet bekend is wie de actie heeft gedaan;
2. Het maakt niet uit wie de actie heeft gedaan.

The house is painted.
My room is cleaned.

She walked the dog → The dog was walked (by her)

The police are doing an investigation → the investigation is being done (by the police)

How to use the passive voice?

1. Het lijdend voorwerp van de (actieve) zin wordt het onderwerp (van de passieve zin).
2. Je zet (in dezelfde tijd als de actieve zin!) het werkwoord 'to be' neer + de past participle.
I clean my room my room is cleaned (by me)

Present simple:
I do the dishes. → The dishes are done (by me).
I help the neighbour. → The neighbour is helped.

Past simple:
She repainted her room. → Her room was repainted (by her).
She read the articles. → The articles were read.

Past continuous:
We were telling the story. → The story was being told (by us).
