1. Quantifiers

What do quantifiers do?

So quantifiers! 

They tell something about the amount (quantity) of a noun. You have different types of nouns:

1. Count nouns: nouns which you can ... count (Someone thought they were very clever...).

2. Mass nouns: noun which you can ... not count.

Adjectives tell something about a noun (This is a lovely flower)

Adverbs tell something about a verb, adjective or another adverb (They walk loudly; this is a deep red flower; this is an intense deep red flower)

What is the past simple about again?

Past Simple

Something that happened and ENDED in the past.

Verb+ed (verb(e)d! 2nd column of irr verbs)

I played football yesterday.

I baked brownies last Friday. (Actually true!)

In Dutch this is called verleden tijd.

How about the present perfect?

Present perfect

Something which has started in the past and which is still ongoing/relevant now; experiences

Present form of to have + past participle (3rd column)

I have played football since I was 9.

I have never baked brownies before. (not true)

In Dutch this is the voltooid tegenwoordige tijd.

So, what is the difference?

Recap:

Past simple is something which has happened in the past and is done. (The event/name it has finished) The present perfect is also about something which has happened in the past but still is relevant right now.

I ___ in Rijswijk when I was younger. (To live)

She ___ six different countries so far. (to visit)

Ow! I ___ my finger... It is still bleeding.

Yesterday, I ___ my finger.

James ____ a new laptop last week.
